Today we discussed how professional development can focus on inclusivity, student agency, biculturalism, and diversity. Such PD can help educators create a classroom environment where all students feel valued and respected. Inclusive practices involve creating a safe and welcoming space for diverse perspectives and experiences, and actively working to eliminate bias and discrimination.
We shared personal experiences in a fun and warming way. I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know my colleagues more as some times, we oursleves miss out on having fun. And as Ruth said today "make learnign fun for learners but make teaching fun for teachers too".
The following are soe of the concepts that we disccussed which were memorable to me:
-Student agency refers to empowering students to take control of their own learning and making choices that affect their educational experience. This can include giving them a voice in the curriculum and allowing them to pursue their interests and passions.
-Bicultural education involves recognising and valuing the diverse cultural backgrounds of students and incorporating that knowledge and understanding into the curriculum. This can help students develop a sense of cultural competence and empathy for others.
-Diversity education aims to increase understanding and appreciation of differences, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability. This can help educators to create a more inclusive and equitable classroom environment, and to support the well-being and academic success of all students.
I really loved the learning strategies that were integrated today and look forward to trying them with my students- especially the doughnut, timeline and folded line.
In summary, we discussed the importance of ensuring we create an environment that is safe, welcoming and valuing for all students, where they can learn and grow in their own way and be equipped to navigate a diverse world.
